IVED 2014: Lead UGM, UI Teams Still Unbeaten Before Silent R6

After 5 preliminary rounds, primary teams from eight-time winner Universitas Indonesia and former champion Universitas Gadjah Mada are still undefeated in the 2014 Indonesian Varsities English Debate, the country's most prestigious 3-on-3 tournament. UGM A (Alif Satria, Indriani Pratiwi, Romario Tambunan) and UI A (Revaldi Wirabuana, Magreta Kailla Adenta, Elvia Sumayastra) both were the only teams with 5 points when they clashed in R6, which is the silent last preliminary round. The break will only emerge a lot later today.

Besides these two teams, the contenders in IVED 2014 come from powerhouses Binus International and Institut Teknologi Bandung. The dark horse this year is Universitas Sanata Dharma A (Tethy Cahyati Pesoa, Irene Anindyaputri, Vania Setiowati) with 4 wins and a loss to UI A before R6. The school has not won any nationwide competition yet but its teams broke in a number of tournaments last year.

IVED 2014 has run relatively smooth with participants praising the hospitality from host Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana, cool climate in Salatiga and the neat accommodation, which usually caters for Bible study groups. There have been some acceptable delays but most grumbles stem from the thin adjudication pool that has led to many single-judge chambers. Salatiga is a Central Java retreat town with UKSW as its only university with a debating presence. The location and transport cost have discouraged some good judges while there had been little effort to upgrade the quality of the local pool. The issue may cease after the break with the number of chambers dropping from 26 to 8.
