The National Universities Debating Championship (NUDC) is a nationwide tournament run by the Ministry of Education. It uses the British Parliamentary style. It started as the National University English Debating Championship (NUEDC) in 2007, a decade after the first IVED, the 3-on-3 national championships. In 2013, the official name changed to its current form.
Unlike other tournaments, invitations are sent to the office of the universities and regional competitions are held to select schools that can participate in the main round. An institution can only send one team, eliminating the chance for a single school domination. The ministry divides the qualification stage of the tournament into 14 regions covering all of Indonesia's 34 provinces. The best 8 teams from each region proceed to the nationals, which should be a battle of 112 colleges.
Schools that are under the supervision of other ministries, like military academies or Finance Ministry feeder Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara, cannot compete in NUDC. Since NUEDC 2009, the three top teams are eligible for state funding to compete in the closest World Universities Debating Championships, elevating the status of this tournament. In the NUEDC era, the winner of the novice category receives the fourth WUDC ticket. Starting from NUDC 2013, that policy stopped and was replaced by a decision to send the top team on the tab with the WUDC entourage.
